With the growing popularity of electric vehicles in Canada and around the world, many people ask whether electric cars can be shipped overseas when relocating.
Due to safety concerns, electric vehicles are generally not accepted for ocean transport by most shipping lines. Many carriers restrict EV shipments because lithium-ion batteries present a higher fire risk during sea transport.
In fact, a cargo vessel carrying more than 4,000 luxury vehicles including Porsche and Bentley caught fire while travelling from Germany to the United States in 2022. The ship burned at sea for nearly a week before the fire was extinguished, raising global concerns about the safety of transporting electric vehicles by sea.
